Fully Funded Research Fellowship Opportunity for International Scholars

The Japan Society for the Promotion of Science is looking for postdoctoral researchers from all over the world. They want these researchers to apply for the Postdoctoral Fellowship Program for Foreign Researchers. This program is for the 2026 to 2027 year. 🔹 Fellowship Types & Duration

  1. Standard Postdoctoral Fellowship
    • Duration: 12 to 24 months
    • Eligibility: Researchers who have completed their PhD within the last 6 years (as of April 1, 2026)

  2. Short-Term Postdoctoral Fellowship
    • Duration: 1 to 12 months
    • Eligibility: Researchers with a PhD (no strict time limit)

Monthly stipend:
 – ¥362,000 JPY (~$2,400 USD) for Standard Fellowship
 – ¥312,000 JPY (~$2,070 USD) for Short-Term Fellowship

Round-trip airfare (economy class) between Home country and Japan
Settlement allowance: ¥150,000–200,000 JPY upon arrival
Overseas travel insurance (medical, accident, liability)

No teaching obligations—focus entirely on research

📌 Note: Fellows are responsible for housing costs (typically ¥50,000–100,000/month), but host institutions often assist with accommodation.

✅ Eligibility Requirements

  • Hold a PhD degree (or expect to complete it before the fellowship start date)
  • Be a non-Japanese citizen residing outside Japan at the time of application
  • Have a confirmed host professor at a Japanese university or research institute
  • Demonstrate strong research potential and alignment with the host’s expertise
  • Not have previously held a JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship

📌 Application Process (Step by Step)

  1. Identify a Host Professor (Critical!)
     – Contact Japanese researchers whose work aligns with yours
     – Secure a formal Letter of Acceptance from them
  2. Prepare Documents:
     – Research proposal (max 5 pages)
     – CV with publication list
     – Two confidential letters of recommendation
     – Host professor’s acceptance letter
     – PhD certificate (or proof of expected completion)
  3. Submit via Your Home Country’s Nominating Authority
     – Applications do not go directly to JSPS
     – Most countries use national agencies (e.g., DAAD in Germany, Fulbright in the U.S.)
     – Check your country’s JSPS liaison office: JSPS Worldwide
  4. Deadlines:
     – Standard Fellowship: Typically September–October 2025 (for 2026 start)
     – Short-Term Fellowship: Varies by country (often January–March 2026)
