The JSPS Invitational Fellowships for Research in Japan provide fully funded opportunities for established international researchers to conduct collaborative research with Japanese institutions. Here are the key details for the FY2026 program (April 2026–March 2027):

Fellowship Types & Duration

  • Long-term: 2 to 10 months www.jsps.org
  • Short-term: 14 to 60 days www.jsps.org
  • Fellowships must commence between 1 April 2026 and 31 March 2027 www.jsps.org

Eligibility Criteria

  • Open to established researchers with an excellent record of research achievements www.jsps.org
  • Applicants must be citizens of countries with diplomatic relations with Japan (Taiwanese and Palestinian researchers are also eligible) jsps-th.org
  • Japanese nationals who have lived outside Japan for at least 10 years while actively engaged in research are also eligible www.jsps.org
  • All research fields (humanities, social sciences, natural sciences) are eligible www.csir.res.in
  • A researcher may receive this fellowship multiple times www.jsps.org

Benefits & Support

  • Long-term fellows:
    • Monthly maintenance allowance: ¥387,600 www.jsps.go.jp
    • Round-trip economy airfare (based on JSPS regulations) www.jsps.go.jp
    • Settling-in allowance: ¥200,000 (one-time) jsps-strasbourg.com
    • Research support allowance: Up to ¥150,000 jsps-strasbourg.com
    • Overseas travel, accident, and sickness insurance jsps-strasbourg.com
  • Short-term fellows:
    • Daily maintenance allowance: ¥18,000/day www.csir.res.in

Application Process

  1. You cannot apply directly – Applications must be submitted by a Japanese host researcher affiliated with a university or research institution www.jsps.go.jp
  2. Contact a potential host researcher in Japan to discuss collaborative research plans opportunitiesforyouth.org
  3. Prepare application documents in coordination with your host (forms L-1/L-2/L-3 for long-term; S-1/S-2/S-3 for short-term) www.jsps.go.jp
  4. Host researcher submits the complete application via their institution’s Administration to JSPS through the Electronic Application System (available ~2 months before deadlines) www.jsps.go.jp
  5. Selection is conducted by JSPS review committees based on research merit and collaboration potential www.jsps.go.jp
